What is a Cleft?
Cleft lip and palate is a condition where the oral cavity of the infant fails to gain complete closure therefore rendering the mouth and the nasal passage open. A cleft presents itself in various formations and is unique to every child.
Statistically, 1 in 800 infants in India is born with a birth anomaly called ‘cleft lip and palate’. A condition that manifests itself in various presentations. According to some organizations, there are over 2 lakh babies born with this condition worldwide and it is the second most common birth anomaly in the world.
Welcoming a cleft baby is an intense time for parents. However, with the right resources and early intervention, a well supported family, a cleft baby can yield heartening results in the long run.
